Additional 3 more cases filed against Daily Star editor

Three cases were filed against The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam on Monday and Sunday night for publishing ‘confusing’ and ‘defamatory’ reports about Awami League president Sheikh Hasina during the 2007-2008 military-backed caretaker regime.

The cases were filed in Pabna, Cox's Bazar and Barguna district.

In Cox's Bazar, Maheshkhali Municipalty former mayor Sarwar Azam filed a defamation case with the court of Arun Pal, Cox's Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrates Court Judge on Monday morning.

In Pabna, Pabna district vice-president of Awami League Rezaul Rahim Lal lodged a complaint with Pabna Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in the morning accusing Mahfuz Anam.

Majibul Haque Kislu, Barguna correspondent of vernacular daily Dainik Jugantor, filed the Tk 50 crore defamation suit with the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on Sunday.

According to the complaint, Mahfuz Anam published reports against Awami League president Sheikh Hasina based on information provided by DGFI without any scrutiny in 2007.

The editor of the leading English daily in a television talk-show confessed to running such stories in his newspaper.
