Gas price stay-ordered for 6-month :High Court

The High Court (HC) on Tuesday stayed 6-month to effective the second phase gas price hike from June 1.

A high court (HC) bench comprising with justice Mainul Isalam Chowdhury and justice ABM  Hasan passed the order.

Earliar on February 23, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) increased gas price in two phases.

The first phase will be started from March 1 and the second phase had to increase from June 1.

The court also issued a rule that asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why the public notification for increasing the gas price from March 1 and June 1 should not be declared illegal.

 The gas prices in the two phases have been hiked 22.73 percent. The price will be imposed on every gas users.

 The price has been hiked each Taka 300 for every users in two phases.

Architecture Mobassher Hossain on behalf of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), filed a writ pettion in the court on Monday challenging the legality of the gas price hike.

Under the rules of BERC-2014, the gas price can hike once in a year, but this year the price was hike in two phases, said Mobassher Hossain, lawyer advocate Md Saiful Alam.

Besides, the price had to hike after mass hearing after 90 days, he said.
