The devastating earthquake in Turkey has raised questions about whether such a large-scale tragedy could have been avoided and whether President Erdogan's government could have done more to save lives. It was the biggest earthquake since 1939.

After being in power for twenty consecutive years, Mr. Erdogan's return to power is in jeopardy. His appeal for national unity was ignored.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan admits that something went wrong in dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake. But he blamed fate for the earthquake during a visit to one of the affected areas, saying, "Such things always happen. It's part of destiny."

Turkey lies on two fault lines and the country's seismic building code is 80 years old.
