EWMGL gets highest taxpayer award again

East West Media Group Limited (EWMGL), a concern of the country’s largest industrial conglomerate Bashundhara Group, has once again topped the list of the highest taxpaying companies in print and electronic media category.

The income tax wing of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) under Internal Resources Division (IRD) has issued a notification in this regard with the names of 141 tax-card winners, including the EWMGL. The EWMGL also received the highest taxpayer award earlier.

The EWMGL owns English newspaper Daily Sun, Bengali dailies Bangladesh Pratidin and Kaler Kantho, TV channels NEWS24 and T-Sports, Radio Capital 94.8 FM and online news portal Banglanews24.com.

The NBR will give tax cards to 76 individuals, 53 organisations and 12 other entities under different categories for their outstanding contributions to the national exchequer for the 2019-20 fiscal year.

The recognition for the highest taxpayers is mandated by the National Tax Card Policy, 2010 (Amended).

The NBR has been awarding tax cards to top taxpayers in separate categories for the last couple of years.

Under the print and electronic media category, Media Star Limited, Transcraft Limited and Media World Limited also won the tax cards.

The individual and corporate taxpayers will be honoured with tax cards, crests and certificates.

Meanwhile, Standard Chartered Bank, Islami Bank, HSBC and National Bank Limited won the tax cards in bank category.

From the non-banking financial institutions, Infrastructure Development Company Limited, IDLC Finance, Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Ltd, and Uttara Finance and Investment Limited have been nominated as tax-card winners.

From the leather industry category, Apex Footwear Limited, Bata Shoe Company (Bangladesh) and Lalmai Footwear Limited won the tax cards.

Grameenphone Limited will also receive a tax card under the telecommunication category.

Coats Bangladesh, Sanjana Fabrics Limited, Badsha Textile Mills Limited, Apex Textile Printing Mills Limited, Fakhruddin Textile Mills Limited, Noman Terrytowel Mills Limited and Envoy Textiles will receive tax cards.

Spectra Engineers Limited, BSRM Steels, ACI Motors have been nominated as tax-card winners.

From the food and beverage sector, Nestle Bangladesh, Olympic industries and Square Food and Beverage have won the tax cards.

Titas Gas Company, Meghna Petroleum and Padma Oil Company Limited will also get tax cards for their contributions to the public exchequer.

In the jute category, Akij Jute Mills, IR Khan Jute Mills and Ayan Jute Mills Limited have been selected as tax-card winners.

The winners from the pharmaceuticals and chemical sector are Unilever, Square, Incepta and Renata.

In the gazette-enlisted war-wounded freedom fighter category, Md Nasir Uddin Mridha, Lieutenant General (retd) Abu Saleh Md. Nasim, Md Joynal Abedin, Professor Indu Bushan Bhaumik and Abdul Mannan have won tax cards.

Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, late Latifur Rahman, Matiur Rahman, Alihussain Akberali and Dr Mustafizur Rahman have been selected as the highest taxpayers from senior citizens.

Hazi Md Kaus Mia, Syed Abul Hossain, Nazrul Islam Mazumder, Nuruzzaman Khan and Mohammad Kamal will receive the awards under the businessmen category.

Under the journalists' category, Mahfuz Anam, Md Abdul Malek, Motiur Rahman, Shaikh Siraj and Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul won the tax cards.

DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Rezaul Karim and Foyez Ullah have been selected as the highest taxpayers from lawyers, engineers and architect categories.

Masuk Ahmed from accountants, Seuli Akhter Nipa from new taxpayers, Shakib Al Hasan from sports, Shakib Khan Rana from actors and actresses, Tahsan Rahman Khan from singers and Kazi Iqbal Harun from other categories will be awarded tax cards.

SN Corporation, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Police Welfare Trust and Asha have been selected as top taxpayers from farm, local government and associations from other category respectively.
