A group of youth has taken an initiative to observe “No Car Day” at least once every month in the capital city Dhaka. They are urging the citizens of the city to not take their private cars out in the streets on that particular day. They aim to reduce traffic and save natural resources such as fuel by taking this initiative.
The day is called upon to be observed from today, Thursday.
The youths are approaching various large corporate offices and requesting the higher officials to ask their employees not to bring their private cars to work. One of the youth involved in this initiative is a student of East West University named Arafat Noman. He shared, “At first a lot of people laughed it off. Then I made them understand not to take their car out on the streets unless there’s an emergency. There’s nothing to force here.” When asked how the response was from such an initiative, the organizers said they got pretty good feedback. On Facebook, at least ten thousand people have shown interest to participate on this event. The organizers are also saying, the situation is different in case of any emergency. If they are successful in this action, they would plead to observe “No Car Day” at least once every month. More specifically, they would observe it on Wednesdays. They think this action would help dilute one of the biggest problems for the people of Dhaka city – traffic jams as well as save a lot of fuel in the process. Such initiative was first seen to be observed in China back in 2007 and since then many European countries have adopted this to lessen the traffic of their busy cities.
