Much-awaited rain brings relief after scorching heat
After several week’s continued heat spell, a short spell of rain today brought much needed relief from hot weather to the people of some regions as well as other living beings including Dhaka city.
Met Office sources said that 10 millimeters of rain were recorded at Chuadanga, five mm at Jessore, two mm at Ishurdi.
The nor’wester entered Bangladesh from West Bengal of India through Rajshahi border around 4pm, the official added.
Dhaka city also received some rains this evening, which has indeed brought a respite from blistering heat wave.
The violent storm reached Dhaka through Kushtia and Faridpur around 6:30pm along with heavy rainfall and thunderstorm, giving the city dwellers a great relief from the scorching heat, UNB reports.
According to the Met Office, today's highest temperature 40.6 degrees Celsius was recorded at Jessore while 37.00 degrees Celsius in the capital. It said abnormally hot weather can be attributed to the absence of pre-Monsoon rains since April. Maximum temperatures in most parts of the country were recorded 4 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal level. As rainfall area is expanding, mercury may go downward trend during the next few days, which will provide a limited relief to the people, they forecasted.
However, the city dwellers preferred to stay indoor today to pass the holiday marking the May Day.
Meanwhile, more than 300 people have died of heat-related illness on April in several states of India, reports news agency AP.
