Agitated garment workers protest against factory closure in Gazipur
According to several media reports, workers of a garment factory staged demonstration in Auchpara area of Tongi in Sadar upazila of Gazipur district on Monday morning protesting against a factory shutdown without any prior consultation.
Quoting locals news agency UNB said the authorities of ‘Mars Stitch Limited’ made an announcement of the shutdown in a notice on Sunday afternoon.
As the workers went to the factory for work on Monday morning, they found the notice stuck on the main gate.
The enraged workers started chanting slogans demanding their unpaid salaries of the last three months.
They also hurled brick chips towards the factory and also tried to block Dhaka-Gazipur highway, reports UNB.
On information, a team of industrial police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said officer-in-charge of Tongi Police Station Firoj Talukder.
