Dhaka hands protest letter to Pakistan high commissioner

The Bagladesh foreign office today has strongly protested against a statement by the Pakistan foreign ministry on the Supreme Court verdict that rejected the review plea against death penalty for Jamaat leader Motiur Rahman Nizami.

Foreign Ministry summoned Pakistan high commissioner to Bangladesh Shuja Alam on Monday afternoon to lodge the protest formally.

Foreign secretary (bilateral) Mizanur Rahman handed over a protest note on behalf of the government of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh authorities termed the Pakistan foreign ministry’s statement on Nizami death penalty ‘totally unacceptable’.

In the May 6 statement, Pakistan Foreign Office said: "We have noted with deep concern and anguish the dismissal of the review application on the death sentence by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh for Mr Motiur Rahman Nizami, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami.”
