HC issues rule over humiliating teacher in N'ganj

The High Court on Wednesday issued a suo motu rule on the government asking it to show cause as to why legal action shall not be taken against those who are responsible for the public humiliation of a teacher in Narayanganj.

A division bench comprising Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ikbal Kabir passed the order.

Two senior lawyers of the Supreme Court, MK Rahman and Mohsin Rashid, dew the court’s attention to the newspaper reports on the humiliation of Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, the headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School.

They also submitted paper clippings to the court in this regard.

The HC directed the home secretary, inspector general of police, superintendent of police in Narayanganj, local UNO and the officer-in-charge to reply to its rule within two weeks.

The court also asked the SP of Narayanganj to submit within three days a report stating the steps taken against the persons responsible for the incident.

On May 13, Headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta was beaten and made to squat and stand up several times holding his ears in public as a punishment for his ‘derogatory’ remarks about Islam.
