A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his associates and police at Shashai on the Dhaka-Shylhet highway in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district early Thursday. The deceased was identified as Mohabbat Kha, 29, a resident of Koarpur village in Nasirnagar upazila of the district. Acting on a tip-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery on the highway, a team of police launched a quick drive there at about 3:30 am, news agency UNB quoted officer-in-charge of Bijoynagar Police Station Ali Arshad as saying. Being distinguished about the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, leaving Mohabbat injured. Later, Mohabbat was rushed to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead. Other cohorts of Mohabbat managed to flee the scene. Three policemen, including Sub-inspector Shafiqul, were injured during the gunfight. Police also recovered a pipe-gun and some sharp weapons from the spot. Mohabbat was wanted in 11 cases, including for robbery, the OC added.
