Increase policewomen in peacekeeping: UN Secy General to IGP
United Nations requested Bangladesh police to increase its female members in UN peacekeeping missions (UNPKM) considering role of female Formed Police Unit (FPU) in the UNPKM, reports news agency UNB. Under Secretary General Hervé Ladsous, head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) requested for the female members of the Bangladesh Police during a meeting with Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque at UN headquarters on Wednesday, according to message received here on Thursday. During the meeting, the UN under secretary general appreciated the role of Bangladesh police in UNPKM and requested the IGP to increase female members of the police force. In response, the IGP said that female members of the FPU are ready to deploy anytime in UNPKM anytime if DPKO desires. In addition, as the second largest police contributing country’s, the IGP requested him to increase of the number of FPU in UNPKM and also to increase participation of lady officer from Bangladesh police in UN Headquarterfrom Bangladesh police . Responding the IGP’s request, Hervé Ladsous said that he will take initiative in this regard. The Under Secretary General also appreciated capacity of Bangladesh police to send FPU on emergency basis within 72 hours in the past.
