14-party alliance to stage countrywide human-chain on June 19

The Central 14-Party Alliance led by Awami League on Friday said it decided to form countrywide one-hour human-chain on June 19 from 3pm to 4pm simultaneously against recent clandestine attacks targeting secular, liberal and minority people.

"BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is doing everything to protect those involved with the secret killings and clandestine attacks . . .the heinous killings have been carried out to achieve evil goals," spokesman of the alliance and Awami League Presidium Member Mohammad Nasim told a press conference followed by a meeting of the coalition at AL president's political office at Dhanmondi here.

He said on June 14 the alliance leaders and workers would visit the residence of the priest who was hacked to death in Jhenaidah and stage a demonstration.

Nasim, also health and family welfare minister, said: "When the country is moving ahead, when our friendly ties with different countries are getting further stronger, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is getting more importance at international conferences; these secret killings are being carried out under an orchestrated plot".

He said Khaleda Zia is backing the killers without conveying sympathy to the family members of the victims. "We have no words to condemn such acts of Begum Zia," the 14-party alliance spokesman said.

The minister said those who are thinking that the government would compromise with the perpetrators of the killings; they are living in a fool's paradise as Sheikh Hasina does not compromise.

Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, organizing secretaries Ahmad Hossain and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Central Working Committee members Sujit Roy Nandi and Aminul Islam Amin, Jatiya Party (JP) General Secretary Sheikh Sahidul Islam, Gonotantri Party Presidium Member Nurur Rahman Selim and Communist Kendro Convener Dr Wajedul Islam, among others, were present on the occasion.
