2 killed as earthquake jolts country
Two people were killed and cracks developed at over 200 houses in Sunamganj and Moulvibazar districts as a mild tremor shook the city and other parts of the country on Tuesday afternoon.
Met office said the earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale was felt at 15:10 pm.
The epicentre of the earthquake was Bangladesh-India border area, near Khagrachhari, 76 km east of Dhaka's Agargaon Seismic Centre.
In Sunamganj, two people were killed in panic triggered by the earthquake.
Hiron Miah, 60, of Asampur village in Jagannathpur upazila, died of cardiac arrest after being panicked by the shake.
In Chhatak upazila, Saima Akter, a class-VIII student of Chhatak Cement Factory School and daughter of Shamsul Haq, died as she fell from the staircase while rushing out of their four-storey house, said Ashiquzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chhatak Police Station.
Besides, Najiur Rahman, 13, of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj district, and Ruba Akter, 16, of Jagannathpur village in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj were injured while running helter-skelter during the jolt.
In Moulvibazar, cracks developed in around 200 houses and business establishments in Kamalganj upazila while a portion of the newly built Zila Parishad auditorium caved in during the earthquake.
Besides, five people were injured in different places of the district during the earthquake.
