Chawkbazar fire brought under control after 10hrs

A devastating fire that broke out at a building in old Dhaka's Chawkbazar area has been brought under control after 10 hours on Thursday morning.

At least 70 people were killed and several injured as a fire broke out at a chemical warehouse of a four-storey building behind Shahi Mosque at Churihatta around 10:30pm on Wednesday and later spread to four other buildings.

Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters sources said being informed, 37 firefighting units rushed to the scene and doused the blaze around 8:30am after 10 hours of frantic efforts.

Local people said the fire originated from a private car gas cylinder explosion in the area.
