Ex-OC Moazzem jailed for 8yrs
A Dhaka Court on Thursday sentenced former OC of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain to eight years imprisonment in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Cyber Tribunal Judge Md As-Shams Jaglul Hossain pronounced the verdict. This is the first verdict under this Act.
The court also fined him Tk 15 lakh. In default, to suffer six months more in jail.
Earlier this morning, OC Moazzem was taken to the court from Kashimpur jail amid tight security.
On November 14, Moazzem had pleaded not guilty and sought justice.
OC Moazzem was accused of unlawfully interrogating Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi and recorded it on phone. A video of the incident went viral on the social media, prompting Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon to file a case against the policeman on April 15 under the Digital Security Act.
On May 27, investigation officer Rima Sultan submitted a 123-page report before the tribunal.
Then, the tribunal issued arrest warrant against Moazzem following plaintiff's plea.
On June 16, Shahbagh Police Station arrested Moazzem from Shahbag area.
Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal sent OC Moazzem to jail on June 17 after rejecting his bail petition in the case filed for recording and spreading the video statement of slain Feni madrasa student Nusrat.
Nusrat Jahan Rafi, 18, an Aleem examinee from Sonagazi Fazil Madrasa, was set on fire by some fellows in the morning of April 6 as she refused to withdraw a case filed against the madrasa principal, Sirajuddoula, for sexual harassment.
On October 24, the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Feni sentenced all the 16 accused to death for killing Nusrat.
