Cabinet okays bill for capital punishment to rapists

The Cabinet on Monday approved, in principle, a bill with a provision of death penalty to those convicted of rape.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq disclosed the mater to reporters today.

He said the draft of amended ‘Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act 2000’ was passed in the Cabinet today.

An ordinance will be issued on Tuesday after getting approval from the president, the minister added.

The law was raised in the Cabinet to award death penalty as the maximum punishment for rape following the nationwide outrage, protest over the rampant raping incidents and violence against women.
