Jatiya Party chairman GM Quader has alleged that the Digital Security Act is being used to suppress political opponents in Bangladesh.

"Some sections of the Digital Security Act are being used as tools to stifle the political opponents. Crimes mentioned in several sections are non-bailable, which is contrary to human rights of individuals," he said while addressing a meeting at the party chairman's Banani office on Sunday afternoon.

"Digital Security Act is necessary to curb cybercrimes. It's an important law and the Jatiya Party is not against it," he said.

"But, some sections of the DSA are being misused, he said. They are threatening individual freedom and also freedom of expression.  They have also curbed the freedom of the press," Quader said.

The Jatiya Party chief said amending the Digital Security Act has become urgent.

"I demand amendment to sections that threaten free thinking, individual freedom and freedom of speech," he said.

With Jatiya Party co-chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud in the chair, the meeting was also addressed by party secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, co-chairman Mujibul Huq Chunnu, presidium members Sheikh Muhammad Sirajul Islam, Fakhrul Imam, Sunil Shuvo Roy.
