Khaleda Zia likely to be taken home in several days
BNP Chaiperson Khaleda Zia, who is now undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital, is likely to be taken to home within the next couple of days.
Sources said Khaleda Zia doesn't want to stay at the hospital anymore. If everything goes well, her physicians want to give necessary treatment keeping her at home.
A source of Khaleda Zia's medical team said the BNP chief was shifted from the coronary care unit (CCU) to cabin on January 9 last after slight improvement of her physical condition. Since then, she became very eager to leave the hospital. In such a context, it was planned to take to her Gulshan residence 'Firoza' on Wednesday last.
However, the plan was abandoned after her maid Fatema tested Covid positive on January 15. Fatema was also admitted to Cabin No. 6024 of Corona Block of Evercare Hospital on January 16.
A decision has been taken that once Fatema gets recovered from Covid-19, Khaleda Zia will be taken to her Gulshan residence.
Meanwhile, Fatema's Covid-19 symptoms have almost disappeared now. So, she may be tested Covid-19 negative within the next one to two days.
Sources said as Khaleda Zia's physical condition has improved substantially, her daughter-in-law Sharmila Rahman Sithi left Dhaka for London on January 16 last. Apart from her medical board members, special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and others are now looking after her. However, restrictions have been imposed on party leaders to meet with her in the wake of rising coronavirus infection.
Khaleda Zia who has been suffering from liver chirrhosis, was admitted to the hospital on November 13 last. A 10-member special medical team led by Evercare physician Dr Shahabuddin Talukder is providing her treatment.
Apart from liver chirrhosis, the 77-year-old former prime minister Khaleda Zia has also been suffering from arthrities, diabetes, kidney ailments, complications in lungs, and eye problems for many years.
Sources said Khaleda Zia's bleeding couldn't be possible to stop after she was admitted to the hospital. The medical board members expressed profound concern about the threat to her life posed by the constant bleeding. Her treatment was carried on with blood collected from outside. Later, capsules fitted with cameras were brought from abroad. Then her capsule endoscopy was done. In the endoscopy, an infection was detected beneath her lower intestine. The physicians later reached a conclusion that bleeding was happening due to the infection. However, the infection was closed by band ligation through endoscopy after lengthy attempts by physicians. Subsequently, the bleeding was stopped.
A member of Khaleda Zia's medical board said Khaleda Zia is not out of danger though her bleeding was stopped for the time being. Bleeding may start again at any moment. So, it has become imperative to take her abroad for proper treatment. Her physicians also opined that liver transplantation is the only treatment for her right now.
He said Khaleda Zia is facing serious physical weakness. She feels distaste about taking food. She can't move without the help of anyone else. In spite of all these problems, Khaleda Zia may be recovered if she is kept at home environment. It's a psychological and humanitarian issue.
