Overhead cables in capital must be removed by June 30: Mayor

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has said that hanging cables in the capital must have to be removed by June 30 next. Otherwise, the DNCC would take necessary steps in this regard.

He made the remarks while speaking at a meeting held at Nagar Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday afternoon regarding the shifting of overhead cables and repairing of roads by different agencies.

The mayor said road digging won't be allowed at anywhere in the capital until further directive from Wednesday as  sufferings of people mounted due to non-compliance of rules by different agencies during excavating of roads.

Different agencies like Dhaka WASA, City Corporation, DESCO, DPDC, BTCL, RAJUK, mobile and internet service providers excavate the roads of Dhaka city throughout the year for laying electrical cables, sewerage line, water pipelines, gas pipelines, internet lines and other construction works.

Atiqul Islam said excavation by different agencies leave the roads unsmooth due to uneven finishing after the work. The agencies concerned will have to repair the roads at their own responsibility.

The Mayor said overhead cables would have to be shifted to undeground in a planned way, and there should be strong coordination among the agencies involved in excavation of roads.

DNCC chief engineer Brigadier General Muhammad Amirul Islam, senior officials, Ward No. 19 councilor Md Mofizur Rahman, heads and representatives of different government and private organisations attended the meeting.
