Jhenaidah councillor candidate found dead

Police recovered the body of a ward councillor candidate in Shailakupa upazila of Jhenaidah on early Thursday, few hours after the brother of his opponent AL candidate was stabbed to death allegedly by rivals.

The body of Alamgir Hossain Babu, an independent councillor candidate of ward no-8 municipal election, was recovered from the bank of Devtala River around 1:30pm.

On the other hand, Liyakot Hossain Boltu, 50, an Awami League activist and also brother of Shailakupa upazila ward no-8 municipal election councillor candidate Shawkat Ali, was stabbed to death around 9:30 pm on Wednesday.

Shailakupa circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ariful Islam said supporters of Alamgir Hossain Babu attacked Boltu at about 8:30pm when they were in the election campaign office in Kabirpur area of Shailakupa upazila.

The attackers stabbed Boltu with lethal weapons, leaving him critically injured. Locals rescued the injured to Kushtia Medical College Hospital where he died within hours, the ASP added.
