Nine-time champion Rafael Nadal eased through to the French Open second round with a crushing defeat of Australian Sam Groth.

The 29-year-old Spanish fourth seed won 6-1 6-1 6-1 in one hour and 20 minutes.

Nadal looked typically at home on the clay at Roland Garros, hitting an astonishing winner through his legs in the third set.

Earlier, Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber was beaten by world number 58 Kiki Bertens.

Nadal will face either Facundo Bagnis or Kenny De Schepper in the second round as he seeks a 10th French Open, and 15th career Grand Slam, title.

Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka are also in action on Tuesday.

Seventh seed Tomas Berdych brushed aside Vasek Pospisil in straight sets in the opening match on court one. Kerber out in straight sets

Third seed Kerber, who has yet to advance past the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, lost 6-2 3-6 6-3.

The German, 28, lost her opening matches at the Madrid and Rome tournaments and a shoulder injury ruled her out of Nuremberg last week.

Bertens, from the Netherlands, won the title in Nuremberg.

Her victory meant Great Britain's Andy Murray was able to finish his match against Czech Radek Stepanek on Tuesday, eventually winning in five sets.
