COVID-19 caseload surpasses 85 mln globally

The coronavirus caseload surpassed 85.09 million on Monday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

The total case count globally reached 85,095,602 while the death toll climbed to 1,842,590 in the morning, reports UNB.

The US, which remained the world's worst-hit country in terms of the number of cases and deaths, has crossed the grim milestone of 20 million cases on New Year's Day.

The country's total cases reached 20,630,543 while 3,51,453 fatalities on Sunday morning.

But there is a glimmer of hope as the seven-day rolling average of daily new cases fell from 219,345.9 on December18 to 194,737.7 on January 1 and the seven-day rolling average of daily new deaths dipped slightly from 2,580 to 2,506 during the same period, reports AP.

Month after dismal month, Americans have been inundated by an ever-rising tide of devastating numbers. Hundreds of thousands of deaths. Tens of million unemployed.

By mid-December, five in every 100 Americans - more than 16 million - had been infected by COVID-19.

Those numbers testify to a historic tragedy. But they don't fully capture the multitude of ways, large and small, that the virus has upended and reconfigured everyday life in the U.S.

Secondly, India registered 10,323,965 caseload and 149,435 deaths, according to the latest update.

Brazil has so far recorded 196,018 deaths from COVID-19 with a total of 7,7,33,746 infection, the data said.

According to official statistics, deaths from COVID-19 during December increased 64.45 percent compared to November, rising from 13,263 to 21,811 in the country.

Bangladesh situation

The Covid-19 death toll in Bangladesh rose to 7,626, raising the mortality rate to 1.48 percent.

In the last 24 hours until Sunday morning, 27 more deaths were recorded, according to a handout from the Directorate General of Health Services.

During this time, 835 new cases were detected through 10,925 tests as 978 more patients recovered. The recovery rate currently stands at 89.26 percent.

So far, 3,260,327 tests have been carried out.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18. The country's infection number reached the 5,00000-mark on December 20. The death toll exceeded 7,000 on December 12.

Dhaka has so far recorded the highest number of fatalities 4,192 or 54.97 percent of all the Covid-19 related deaths in the country.
