Bangladeshi-American becomes Lt. Commander in New York Police

Expatriate Bangladeshi-American Shamsul Haque has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in New York Police (USA) Intelligence Squad.

He was inaugurated by NYPD officials at a ceremony at New York Police Department (NYPD) Police Academy in Queens, New York last Friday (January 29).

In an immediate response after being promoted, Lieutenant Shamsul Haque said, "I am the first Bangladeshi to get this promotion."

Many expatriate Bangladeshis serving in the New York Police Force will also be able to come to this position in the future. Shamsul Haque joined NYPD in January 2004. At that time a handful of Bangladeshis were working as police officers in the United States.

In 2010 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2014. He later joined the NYPD's elite internal affairs investigation group.

Bangladeshi-American Shamsul Haque came to the United States from Bangladesh in 1991. After coming to this country, he has worked in various positions including restaurant bus boy, deliveryman and manager.

Besides, he continued his studies with a firm commitment to do something better in the future. Shamsul Haque obtained his diploma degree in 1997. He later completed AS from Lagardia College and BBA from Baruch College. While at Baruch College, he served as chairperson of the CNEY Trustee. He later earned a master's degree in public administration from Columbia University.

Lieutenant Shamsul Haque was born in Baghar village of Golapganj in Sylhet district of Bangladesh. His father was late Abdul Musabbir and his mother was late Nurun Nesha.

He lives in Queens, New York with his wife Rubina Haque and two sons. All his siblings live in New York.

Shamsul Haque said he decided to join the police department after blaming Muslims for September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York.

He called on several Bangladeshi American officers in this regard. With them he founded an organization called Bangladeshi American Police Association (BAPA).

He served as president of the organization. Through the organization, he helped recruit hundreds of Bangladeshis to the NYPD. At present, NYPD has about 400 police officers, detectives, sergeants, 3 lieutenants and 3 commanders. In addition, there are hundreds of traffic agents employed by NYPD.

Leaders of the expatriate Bangladeshi community in New York have separately congratulated him on the news of his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Intelligence Squad of the New York Police Force.
